I am sorry for combining these two days together.

My phone suddenly bit the dust and I am having a hard time recovering my files. I did manage to grab one of my videos. (at bottom of post)

This weekend, we visiting the local Fast CAT event in a park.

(We were not there to run but instead participate in the AKC FIT DOG Walk, and get exposure to lots of dogs barking in an area.)

Instead of trying chicken tracks, I decided to use out FIT walk to play with an article.

Saturday (The video) I only had a rag with me, but Sunday I remembered to bring a few smaller/less obvious items. (A black drink coozie, a glove, and a black sock)

Saturday:

  • 10:30 AM - Weather: 55F, 50% Humidity, Partially Cloudy, Wind WNW 14 mph.

Sunday:

  • 11:30 AM - Weather: 57F, 38% Humidity, Sunny, Wind SW 8 mph.

How did it feel?

  • Pretty alright. Wren was a bit distracted and less intense on snagging and bringing back the article, but that's to be expected where we could hear all the other dogs barking at the Fast CAT field. There were also tons of other dogs doing the walk, people from the kennel club she knows, and lots of fun smells in the park she's never been to before.

    Goal for next game:

  • Practice more in familiar environment to really 'capture' the steps of the end result I want. (Wren grabbing the article and bringing it to me, vs wanting to walk off with it.)

  • I think I have confused her a bit with not properly showing what I want her to do in this context (engage with the article without me directing her to) especially since we had worked a lot on those puppy behaviors of not grabbing everything off the ground over the summer. (before we started tracking lessons)

She is off to a good start. I would go back and review the article videos. Start with Can You? she likely has a pick up or take it or fetch command. That would be your starting point. Glove on the ground, one command to fetch - any effort to pick it up, YES & reward. That quickly moves to she picks it up and you back up a few steps to invite her in. It is just a game. So she can work for her supper by picking up that glove on your kitchen floor. Then play Opps I Dropped Something inside. When she pounces on it and picks it up, mark it YES, step back and invit…
