I practiced 3 tracks in 1 session.

Each track was a close spaced trail of Chicken with No Articles.

Session 1:

  • Weather: 33F, 42% Humidity,

    Partially Cloudy, Wind NNW 16mph.

  • Located in Fort Eustis near training fields.

    • Track One - 9:37am & Ran at 9:41am

      • 30 yd on short grass

      • Chicken was spaced about every15 inches.

    • Track Two - Laid at 9:50am & Ran at 9:55am

      • 5 yd in medium-tall field/brush grasses.

      • Chicken was spaced closer together for new surface.

    • Track Two - Laid at 10:00am & Ran at 10:07am

      • 8 yd in medium-tall field/brush grasses.

      • Chicken was spaced closer together for new surface.

GOAL FOR THE TRACK: (Same Goal for these Two Sessions today)

  • To practice with new grasses

How did it feel?

  • It was very interesting seeing her work through the taller brushy/grass sections. I am also impressed she was wanting to work in that extra cold biting wind! We played a very short game of tug beforehand to see how she was feeling about the extra windy gusts whipping across those fields.

List three things the dog did well:

  1. Not giving a flying hoot about the cold windy windy conditions.

  2. Ignoring the car and heavy machinery traffic off to the sides of the field.

  3. Working around the new taller grass/brushy spots with ruts in the ground.

List things you’d like to improve:

  1. Me getting a harness for holding the camera in places where I can't set it down. (That one handed handling is YIKES) Looks like I'm yanking her all over trying to keep one hand steady.

  2. More consistent placing distance for her food tracks.

Goal for next track:

  • Give her longer, 'easier' setting tracks to length

  • Continue Selecting more short track spots in this type of environment to practice in.

Hi Heather

Those tracks looked good. Glad you explained about holding the camera while holding the line. That is a challenge. I have asked one of our classmates to post something about which phone harness she uses and the pros and cons. Hopefully we will see something soon as I would like to purchase one.

It was nice to read that she was able to work with noise distractions, high wind, cars, etc. That says she is into the game. Glad you adjusted your food drops as you moved to different vegetation. Try to write down your foot pattern and food pattern. That information is helpful as you progress. Happy you were successful on a cold, windy day and remember…
